Spa Services Explained: What Each One Does and Who It Suits

A spa is a place for well-being, and the services offered in a spa usually include massage, skin care, body treatments and wellness sessions. Many spas add hair removal and combined packages. A visit can last 30 minutes or a full afternoon, depending on what you book.

The guide below explains each service in plain words: what it does, how long it takes and who it suits. The times and prices come from the menu at Above & Beyond Wellness Spa, home of our spa services in Fenton, Missouri.

Please read: a wellness note

A wellness spa wrote this page as general information. It is not medical advice.

Check with your doctor before you book a facial, peel, laser, heat or firm-pressure service if you are pregnant, are recovering from surgery or take medicine that affects your skin. Do the same if you have a skin condition or an allergy.

Any service that is not for you today may suit you later. Results vary from person to person.

What Is a Spa?

A spa is a place devoted to overall well-being through professional services that renew the mind, body and spirit. That is how the International SPA Association (ISPA), the spa industry trade group, defines it. A spa can be a day spa, a hotel spa, a medical spa or a destination resort.

ISPA counts resort and hotel, destination, mineral springs, medical, club and day spas as members. Our spa in Fenton is a wellness spa. Its menu centers on massage, skin care, laser, salt room, red light and waxing services.

What Does a Massage Therapy Session Include?

A massage therapy session is hands-on work on your muscles and soft tissue to ease tension and help you relax. You choose the style and the length: 30, 60 or 90 minutes. Our menu includes Therapeutic, Swedish, Sports and Deep Tissue, Cupping, Lymphatic, Prenatal, Ashiatsu and Raindrop massage.

Add-ons let you tailor a session: hot salt stones, reflexology, aromatherapy, CBD oil, tuning forks, a paraffin wax treatment or a salt scrub for hands and feet. Couples massage gives two people side-by-side sessions with a therapist each, in 60 or 90 minutes.

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) is part of the National Institutes of Health. It reports that the risk of harmful effects from massage therapy appears to be low. Our guide to the types of massage therapy compares the main styles.

Who it suits: Muscle tension, stress or stiffness, or a day spent sitting. Choose Swedish for a lighter, relaxing session or Deep Tissue for firmer pressure.

What Does a Spa Facial Include?

A spa facial cleans, exfoliates and hydrates your skin, and most include a facial massage and a mask matched to your skin type. Our menu runs from a 30-minute Therapeutic Facial to a 90-minute Anti-Aging Facial.

The Hydrofacial (60 minutes) pairs water, oxygen and gentle suction to clean the skin and clear out impurities in one session. The Back Facial takes 45 minutes, and the Gentleman’s Facial takes 60. The Acne-Prone Facial picks products to fit your skin, and the Therapeutic Facial comes in 30 or 60 minutes.

Who it suits: Clearer skin, a first spa visit, steady skin care and mild concerns such as dryness or dullness.

What Do Chemical Peels Do?

A chemical peel uses a controlled solution to lift away dull surface skin so fresher skin shows through. Peels at our spa run $90 to $195, priced by depth and add-ons. Most spa peels are light to moderate, and one of ours is done as a series of three to four peels.

Cleveland Clinic describes a light, or lunchtime, peel as removing the outermost layer of skin. It is often done in a series. It may suit fine wrinkling, acne, uneven coloring or dry, rough, sun-damaged skin.

$90 to $195Priced by depth and add-ons

Who it suits: You want more change than a facial gives, with little downtime: dullness, uneven tone, mild discoloration or rough texture.

What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling uses fine needles to make tiny channels in the skin, which prompts the skin to repair itself and make collagen. A resurfacing session at our spa takes 60 to 90 minutes and costs $250 to $285. People choose it for texture, mild scars and uneven tone.

Plan to skip makeup, sun and heavy workouts for 24 to 48 hours afterward. Our post on whether microneedling works covers the research and what results to expect.

60 to 90 minutes$250 to $285

Who it suits: A smoother texture, a more even tone or long-term rejuvenation, once you have tried a facial or peel.

What Do Spa Laser Treatments Do?

Spa laser treatments use focused light below the skin surface to reach what a facial or peel cannot. One platform at our spa covers 21 services, from resurfacing and hair removal to scar revision and pain relief. A single photobiomodulation session starts at $95, and the full 4D Face Lift tops the range at $1,200.

Laser covers:

  • Deep lines, loose skin and sun damage.
  • Acne scars and stretch marks.
  • Visible veins and benign lesions.
  • Unwanted hair and nail fungus.
  • Muscle and joint pain, through photobiomodulation.

A consultation comes before your first treatment. It covers your skin history, any medication that affects treatment and what is realistic. Lifting and tightening have their own page of face and neck lift treatments.

Who it suits: You want a result that goes further than a facial or a peel, without surgery.

What Is Halotherapy, and What Happens in a Salt Room?

Halotherapy, also called salt therapy, means breathing air that carries fine dry salt while you sit in a quiet room. A single visit at our spa runs 10, 20 or 30 minutes and costs $30 to $50. An unlimited monthly bundle runs $59 to $79.

People book it for easier breathing, for seasonal changes or just for the quiet. Our salt room benefits guide shows what the research supports.

10, 20 or 30 minutes$30 to $50

Who it suits: Anyone who wants a soothing session with nothing to do but sit still.

What Does Red Light Therapy Do?

Red light therapy shines low-level red light on your skin for a few minutes. Cleveland Clinic describes it as showing promise for wrinkles, redness, acne and scars, with research still growing. A single session at our spa costs $30 to $55, and a monthly unlimited bundle costs $59 to $79.

The unlimited bundle covers one session a day on six days of the week. Glasses or goggles are provided for eye protection. Read more in our red light therapy for skin guide, which explains what to expect.

Who it suits: Simple support for skin or recovery, without a bigger treatment.

What Are TightWave and IntimaWave Sessions?

TightWave and IntimaWave use magnetic stimulation to make muscles contract without any effort from you, and nothing breaks the skin. TightWave works the core, back, glutes and legs. IntimaWave is a seated session for the pelvic floor.

A 30-minute consultation costs $50, and each treatment runs $95 to $149. Most clients notice improvements within 4 to 6 sessions of 20 to 30 minutes. Our IntimaWave benefits guide explains how the chair works and what the research shows.

What Do Waxing, Brow and Lash Services Include?

Waxing removes hair at the root and exfoliates dead skin at the same time, and brow and lash services shape and define your features. The wax menu covers the brows, upper lip, nose, chin, arms, underarms, chest, back and legs.

A full face wax uses vegan wax. Brow and lash options include tints, a lash lift and brow lamination.

What Is a Full Service Spa?

A full service spa offers several categories under one roof. That usually means massage, skin care, body treatments and wellness services, so you can book more than one service in a visit.

Menus differ from spa to spa. Resort and destination spas often add hydrotherapy pools, saunas and salons.

Our spa works the same way on a smaller scale, with seven service groups at 50 Fenton Plaza: massage, skin care, laser, salt room, red light, TightWave and waxing. Spa packages combine them.

How Long Does Each Spa Service Take?

Spa services run from 10 minutes for a salt room or red light session to 1 hour 50 minutes for a four-service package. The bars show the longest session time listed for each service on the menu.

Red light therapy: up to 20 minutes
Halotherapy (salt room): up to 30 minutes

Laser treatments: up to 60 minutes

Who Are Spa Services For?

Spa services suit most adults, including first-timers, men, couples and anyone who wants a quiet hour.

At our spa, men can book a 60-minute Gentleman’s Facial. Two people can share a 60 or 90 minute couples massage. A first visit can be a gentle 10 to 20 minute session.

  • Men: a 60-minute Gentleman’s Facial made for men, including those with facial hair, plus chest and back waxing.
  • Couples: side-by-side massage, each partner with their own therapist.
  • First-timers: a 30-minute Therapeutic Facial, a 30-minute massage or a 10-minute salt room session.
  • Busy schedules: red light and salt room sessions of 10 to 30 minutes.

How Do Spa Memberships and Packages Work?

A package bundles several services into one visit, and a membership lowers the price of each service you book. Our packages combine 3 or 4 services in 50 minutes to 1 hour 50 minutes. A membership takes $5 to $55 off each service.

  • One package pairs red light (10 minutes), the salt chamber (10 minutes) and TightWave Rehab (30 minutes), 50 minutes in all.
  • A spa membership also gives 10% off retail skincare and guest passes at member pricing. Choose monthly or no commitment.
  • Loyalty points: every 60 minutes of service earns 10 points, and 30 points buy a 30-minute session upgrade.

Spa Services Questions, Answered

Five answers to questions the sections above leave open.

What should you tell the spa before your first visit?

Tell your provider about pregnancy, recent surgery, allergies, medicines, skin conditions and any area that hurts. The intake form asks for most of this. Add what you want to feel better about, and your provider will match a service and adjust pressure or products.

Is a spa the same as a salon?

A spa focuses on well-being and skin services such as massage, facials and wellness sessions. A salon focuses on hair, nails and styling, and some places do both. We offer spa services only, and the chart above lists all 10 groups.

How often should you visit a spa?

Many people book monthly for massage or skin care. One of our peels is a series of three to four, four weeks apart, and most laser face treatments come as three sessions, four to six weeks apart. Monthly unlimited bundles suit frequent salt room and red light visits.

Do spa services need downtime?

Massage, facials, salt room, red light and TightWave sessions need no recovery time, so you can go straight back to your day. Peels bring a few days of mild peeling. Microneedling leaves redness like a sunburn for 24 to 72 hours, so ask us before you book around an event.

Can you get spa services with sensitive skin?

Yes. Tell your provider about sensitivity, allergies or a past reaction to a product before the service. Your provider can then choose products and a service to match, and you can ask about any ingredient before it touches your skin.
