Chemical Peel Aftercare: A Day-by-Day Recovery Plan

Chemical peel aftercare comes down to four habits: wash gently, moisturize, wear sunscreen every day and leave the flaking alone. A light peel heals in about 3 to 7 days, and a medium peel takes 7 to 14 days, says Cleveland Clinic.

You get a day-by-day plan for each peel depth, the dates to restart your usual products, and the signs that mean you should call. The guide also sorts out why aftercare advice online disagrees.

The sources are Cleveland Clinic, the American Academy of Dermatology, the FDA and a Stanford dermatology review. The plan our estheticians give clients in Fenton, Missouri, adds our own dates.

Chemical Peel Recovery Timeline: Day by Day, by Peel Depth

Your downtime and recovery depend on how deep the peel goes. Pick your peel below to see each stage. Your esthetician will tell you which depth you are getting at your chemical peel consultation.

Chemical peel healing timeline, day 1 to day 14Light peel: pink and tight on day 1, light flaking days 2 to 5, flaking ends days 3 to 7, back to your routine from day 7. Medium peel: swelling in the first 2 days, redness peaks days 4 to 5, makeup is possible days 5 to 7, peeling finishes days 7 to 14.13571014Day after your peelLight peelPink and tightLight flakingFlaking endsBack to your routineMedium peelSwellingRedness peaksMakeup is possiblePeeling finishes

Where are you in your peel?

Open your peel type, then the day you are on. Not sure which you had? Ask your esthetician.

Light peel
Day 1 Pink and tight

Expect pink, tight skin, much like a mild sunburn, and your esthetician applies moisturizer and sunscreen as you leave. Makeup is fine the next day, and Cleveland Clinic says some people can wear it right away.

Days 2 to 5 Light flaking

Light flaking starts, and the flakes shed on their own if you leave them alone and skip scrubbing.

Some people see only a little flaking, or none.

Days 3 to 7 Flaking ends

Flaking ends and the new skin looks brighter. Cleveland Clinic puts the whole redness-then-scaling stage at 3 to 7 days for a light peel.

Day 7 and after Back to your routine, step by step

Keep the gentle routine for the full 7 days. Then ask your esthetician before you restart scrubs, acids or retinoids. Wear sunscreen every day from now on.

Medium peel
First 48 hours Swelling

Swelling can grow before it settles, and Cleveland Clinic says it may last or worsen for 48 hours. Ice packs help.

Blisters can form and break open, so follow your esthetician’s care steps closely.

Days 4 to 5 Redness peaks

Redness peaks and the skin crusts, so keep your hands off it even when it itches.

Days 5 to 7 Makeup is possible

Camouflage makeup can cover the redness after 5 to 7 days. Cleveland Clinic and the American Academy of Dermatology both give that window for a medium peel.

Days 7 to 14 Peeling finishes

The crust peels off over 7 to 14 days. Keep the area out of the sun until it has fully healed. Redness can last for weeks.

Deep peels are a different process. They need bandages, 14 to 21 days to heal and 3 to 6 months out of the sun, says Cleveland Clinic.

Light and medium peels done by a professional are the focus here, so the guide is not for deep peels or at-home peels.

Healing varies from person to person, so these steps should not replace your esthetician’s plan. This is general information, not medical advice, and your doctor is the right call for anything medical.

What to Do After a Chemical Peel: The First 48 Hours

Six aftercare instructions protect new skin while it heals.

  1. Wash gently. Use a mild cleanser and pat dry. Our plan says no hot water on your face for 7 days.
  2. Moisturize. Apply lotion or cream as directed until the skin heals. Cleveland Clinic says daily moisturizer helps prevent scarring.
  3. Wear sunscreen. After any peel, put on broad-spectrum sunscreen daily. New skin burns faster.
  4. Skip tanning. Cleveland Clinic says no tanning bed and no outdoor tanning while the skin heals.
  5. Leave scrubs, acids and retinoids alone. Our plan is 7 days without them.
  6. Do not pick or scratch. Cleveland Clinic says scratching can lead to infection.

Have these at home before your peel:

  • A mild cleanser.
  • A plain moisturizer.
  • A broad-spectrum sunscreen.
  • A wide-brim hat.
  • Ice packs, if you are having a medium peel.

Our Blueberry Jessner series also includes a $44 Cosmedix Pre- or Post-Care Kit.

Ask your esthetician when hard workouts and saunas are safe again. We set that date for your peel at your visit.

Why Chemical Peel Aftercare Advice Disagrees, and What to Trust

Pages on this topic give different numbers, and six of the seven ranking pages we read name no source. The American Academy of Dermatology and Cleveland Clinic agree on the medium-peel window of 7 to 14 days, which is why we use them. These are the four questions where advice differs the most.

QuestionWhat you may readWhat the sources say
How long to protect your skin from the sunAnywhere from 2 days to 6 weeks.Cleveland Clinic says a medium peel needs no sun on the area until it fully heals. Every peel needs daily sunscreen afterward. We recommend daily sunscreen for good.
When to restart retinoids and acidsFrom 1 week to 4 weeks. Our minimum is 7 days, and then your esthetician sets the date. The FDA found that four weeks of alpha hydroxy acid cream raised sun sensitivity by 18 percent. It was back to normal a week after people stopped.
FlakesSome pages say to snip loose pieces. Others say never touch them.Cleveland Clinic warns that scratching can lead to infection. Let flakes shed on their own, and ask your esthetician before you trim anything.
MoisturizerA few pages say it slows peeling.Cleveland Clinic says to moisturize daily. None of the three neutral sources we read says moisturizer slows healing.

The FDA’s sun finding comes from alpha hydroxy acid creams, which are milder than a peel. We use it as a reminder that treated skin is more sensitive to the sun, not as a rule for your restart date. A Stanford dermatology review lists dark patches, infection and cold sore flare-ups among peel complications, which is why your esthetician sets your dates.

What to Expect After a Chemical Peel: What Is Normal and When to Call

Some changes are part of healing. A few mean you should call. Good aftercare reduces the chance of abnormal skin color and other problems, says Cleveland Clinic, but you cannot rule them out.

Normal while you heal
  • Redness like a mild sunburn.
  • Tight, dry skin.
  • Light flaking on days 2 to 5 after a light peel.
  • Swelling that peaks within 48 hours after a medium peel.
  • Crusting and peeling for 7 to 14 days after a medium peel.
  • Blisters that break open after a medium peel (Cleveland Clinic).
Call your esthetician or doctor
  • Itching, swelling or burning that builds instead of fading (Cleveland Clinic).
  • Tingling or a cluster of blisters if you get cold sores.
  • Signs of infection, such as pus, spreading redness or fever.
  • Dark patches that appear as the skin heals.

Chemical Peel Aftercare for Deeper Skin Tones

Deeper skin tones can have a peel safely, with a few changes. Cleveland Clinic says a darker skin tone carries a greater risk of darkening after treatment, called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

At our Fenton spa, clients with deeper skin tones get light lactic or mandelic peels. Their series moves more slowly, sunscreen rules are strict, and a patch test is available on request.

Your aftercare checklist:

  • Wear sunscreen and a hat from day one.
  • Do not pick, scratch or scrub, even when the skin itches.
  • Call early if a dark patch shows up, because early care helps.

Questions to Ask at Your Peel Appointment

Seven questionsTake this list along

A short list helps you leave with a clear plan. Ask your esthetician these before you go.

  • Which peel depth am I getting?
  • When will I start to flake, and how long will it last?
  • What should I put on my skin, and when?
  • When can I restart my retinol and other active products?
  • When can I work out, use a sauna or wax?
  • Who do I call if something looks wrong?
  • Is there anything about my health history, such as cold sores, that changes my plan?

Chemical Peel Aftercare Questions, Answered

The answers below cover points the sections above skip.

Do you need an antiviral after a chemical peel?

Cleveland Clinic lists antiviral medicine in the plan for medium and deep peels. It is a prescription, so your doctor decides.

If cold sores run in your history, mention it at booking. A peel can set off a flare-up. Your doctor may prescribe an antiviral, taken beginning 24 hours ahead of your appointment.

Who should wait before getting a chemical peel?

Cleveland Clinic names three reasons a peel may not be advised. One is a history of abnormal scarring or extra coloring in scars. Another is a skin condition or medicine that makes your skin more sensitive.

The third is not being able to stay out of the sun while you heal. Our guide to who should wait and why has the full list.

Do the same rules apply to at-home peels?

Not always. The FDA says the more serious reactions, such as burning, rash and swelling, appear most often with products that exfoliate the most, like skin peelers. Read the label on any home product, and follow your esthetician’s plan after a professional peel.
